Calm restored after mob attack at Ejura police station over suspect’s death
The Ghana Police Service has restored calm in Ejura after a mob attacked the Ejura police station early Saturday morning, following the death of a suspect in custody.
According to the police, the suspect had been arrested on Friday night for allegedly stealing and was detained for further investigations. At around 2:20 a.m., the suspect reportedly complained of feeling unwell and was taken to the Ejura Government Hospital for medical attention.
He later died while receiving treatment.
The police said that tensions escalated as arrangements were being made to transport the body to the morgue for preservation and autopsy. A group of people from the Ejura community stormed the police station, set parts of it ablaze, and forcibly took the body away.
The Ghana National Fire Service was called to extinguish the blaze. Police officials stated that with the assistance of community leaders and the military, calm was restored, and no casualties were recorded during the disturbance.
The Ghana Police Service has urged the public to remain calm and cooperate with ongoing investigations.
They assured the public that measures were in place to prevent further unrest in the area.
