Chantan Zonal Council inaugurated

The Chantan Zonal Council of the Ga Central Municipal Assembly (GCMA) has been inaugurated with the key objective of mobilising more revenue and strengthening the decentralisation system of governance in the area.

It is made up of four electoral areas, namely Nii Okaiman West, Okaiman East, Lomnava and Kwashie-Bu.

The GCMA will seek to improve sanitation as well as the management of the affairs of the communities in and around Chantan.

The council is made up of the environmental health department, a revenue collection office, an informal education department, among others.

Being the second zonal council in the municipality, it will seek to develop ideas that will promote the socio-economic development of the local communities.

The ceremony was attended by representatives of the Member of Parliament (MP) for the Anyaa/Sowutuom Constituency, Ms Shirley Ayorkor Botchway, the outgoing Presiding Member of the assembly, Mr Sheriff Fathah, assembly members of the various electoral areas in the municipality and the Dzaasetse of Nii Okaiman, Nii Adjedu I.

Need for zonal council

In an address, the Municipal Chief Executive of the GCMA, Mr Aristo Aryee, underscored the need for the establishment of zonal councils in the municipality.

He said the new zonal council would allow residents who lived nearby to have access to the place without travelling to the municipality’s head office at Sowutuom.

Mr Aryee said the inauguration of the council was a way of giving majority of the people an opportunity to participate effectively in the decision-making process.

He also showered praises on Mr Fathah for his immense contribution to the assembly and helping to secure the office facility.

Mr Aryee called for strict maintenance of the facility and advised the workers to be diligent in their duties.

He pledged to support the council with the needed resources to ensure its sustenance.

The Ga Central Municipal Assembly was carved out of the Ga South Municipal Assembly and inaugurated on Thursday, June 28, 2012, with its head office at Sowutuom in the Greater Accra Region.

It has nine electoral areas, namely Awoshie, Anyaa, Santa Maria, Sowutuom, LomNava, Kwashie-Bu, Ablekuman and Nii Okaiman East and West.
