Chiefs build on capacity

The General Overseer of the Glory and Hope Ministries International in the Ashanti Region, Apostle Sampson Adjei Berko, has challenged traditional chiefs in Ghana to modify the institution to conform to emerging trends in order to meet the expectations of their subjects.

He said chiefs should be able to explore opportunities that existed both locally and internationally to design tailor-made solutions for the problems of their people.

Apostle Adjei was addressing traditional rulers at a special capacity-building workshop organised by the College of Christian Chiefs and Missionaries in Kumasi.

The college is a non-governmental organisation with the aim of promoting collaboration between the chieftaincy institution and the church.

The objective of the programme was to demonstrate that it was possible for traditional rulers, particularly chiefs, to continue to exercise their authority and at the same time be good christians.

Apostle Berko said chiefs could partner the private sector in projects that met the basic needs of their people rather than wait for  the government to do everything for them.

‘By such initiatives, you would be able to sustain the support of your people. Being a legitimate ruler does not only rest with your enthronement but also with what you can do for your people,” he said.

The Convener and Founder of the college, Rev. Nana Adu Gyamfi II, said there was a lot christianity and the chieftaincy institution could achieve if both worked together.

The founder of the College of Christian Chiefs and Missionaries, who is also a reverend minister and a chief,  believed there was a thin line between the two and that the success of one could easily rob on the other.
