Chieftaincy Ministry documents succession

As part of efforts at minimising chieftaincy disputes, the Ministry of Chieftaincy and Traditional Affairs has engaged the services of 15 research officers to document information that will guide chieftaincy succession and help resolve disputes, should they arise.

Apart from research work to establish facts on chieftaincy succession for the research committees of the National House of Chief, the research officers will also investigate chieftaincy issues for information that will aid the relevant authorities to prevent or resolve chieftaincy conflicts.

The sector Minister, Dr Henry Seidu Danaa, who announced this in Accra yesterday when the ministry took its turn at the meet-the-press series, said as part of the strategy to stop, or at least minimise conflict, tension and confrontations over chieftaincy, the ministry had also used traditional festivals to impress on the people what they should do to achieve a peaceful and dignified chieftaincy system.

Harmful practices.

On the elimination of harmful traditional practices, Dr Danaa said the ministry, in collaboration with the National House of Chiefs and with financial support from USAID Ghana, had launched a project on practices which were harmful and violated human rights.

Challenges

The minister mentioned inadequate budgetary allocation and the delay in the release of funds as the major challenges that continued to militate against the implementation of policies and programmes of the ministry.

He said the ministry continued to grapple with inadequate staffing at the regional and traditional council levels, adding that its office building was rather old and dilapidated and almost all the structures needed complete renovation.

On the way forward, Dr Danaa said the chieftaincy institution had become more relevant than ever before, as chiefs and queenmothers continued to play active roles in governance, as well as in the socio-economic development of the country.

He promised that the ministry would always work to promote the activities of the institution because of the complementary role it played in national development, adding that it would continue to resource its institutions and agencies to enable them to deliver their mandate more effectively and efficiently.

He said to promote communication between the ministry and other stakeholders, such as the media and the public, the ministry had established an interactive website.

“Information on the site could be accessed on www.mcta.gov.gh.  It is our expectation that this will go a long way to strengthen the communication links and provide timely and accurate information on our policies, programmes and activities for the public,” he said.
