He was speaking at the launch of the 2015 edition of ‘Little Green Hands’, which was held in partnership with the Environmental Department of the U.S. Embassy in Accra.

‘Little Green Hands’ is an initiative by Conservation Alliance to advocate pertinent environmental issues and it targets basic school children between the ages of eight and 14.

The launch was held on the theme: “Stimulating Environmental Care And Ownership In Our Future Generation Today” and was attended by schoolchildren selected from the Armed Forces Basic School and some schools in Dansoman, all in Accra.

The pupils displayed placards which had various inscriptions including, “Environment is our life”; “Poor Sanitation = Higher Hospital Bills”; “Keep our environment clean”, and “Join Little Green Hands”.

Mr Yaw Owusu said it was time children were equipped with better waste management ideas and technology  so that by the time they became adults, they would continue to care for the environment.

He called on the government, stakeholders and well-meaning Ghanaians to come on board the ‘Little Green Hands’ initiative and support it to achieve its aim of promoting a better environment by stimulating environmental practices in children.

Save the environment

The guest speaker, Ms Ama Odame Okyere of the Ama Odame Okyere Foundation (AOO), reiterated the urgent need for measures to save the environment from its current deplorable situation.

She lamented the unhygienic conditions prevailing in some industries, lorry parks, other public places and even individual homes, attributable to improper waste disposal and indiscipline.

Ms Okyere said such acts of indiscipline and uncleanliness led to the outbreak of diseases which were preventable. She hailed the ‘Little Green Hands’ initiative and called on corporate institutions and individuals to support it.
