Collapsing storey building kills three

Three people died when the porch of a three-storey building  at Sofo-Abodwese in Kumasi collapsed on Monday night.

The deceased were identified as Josephine, aka Maame Joe, 28, Anita Dufie-Agyemang, 28, both  occupants of the house and the third victim, only identified as Georgina, 40, was said to be visiting a relative in the house.

Their bodies have been deposited at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital  mortuary for autopsy.

Three other residents of the house suffered various degrees of injury and were rushed to the Tafo Government Hospital where they were treated and discharged.

Briefing the Daily Graphic on Tuesday, an eyewitness, Mr Kwadwo Frimpong, said at about 8:30 p.m, the occupants of the house heard a loud noise from a section of the building.

According to him, when the they rushed out of their rooms, they found that the porch of the building had collapsed.

He said the occupants did a roll call and thereafter called the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) to help rescue those who were suspected to have been trapped.

Mr Frimpong said personnel of the GNFS were able to retrieve two bodies from the rubble.

The Assistant Fire Officer at the Manhyia fire station, Mr John Dankwah, in an interview at the scene, said upon their arrival at the scene, they were able to remove some of the rubble from the site where they found the bodies of two people.

He said  the body of the last victim, Dufie-Agyemang, was found buried under a large pillar around 9: 50 a.m. Tuesday.
