Committee organises Counselling Hour for congregation

There comes a stage in everybody’s life when seeking advice is the only choice by which  problems can be dealt with successfully.

Problems may be personal or relate to one’s occupation. Whatever the case may be, a helpful, timely and effective advice is the valuable source to support individuals in all walks of life. A good piece of advice can bring a sea of change in one's life and this is the relevance of counselling.

People typically undergo counselling because they are hurting, frustrated, or feeling overwhelmed by a problem. In most cases, difficult circumstances drive the felt need for counselling.

Circumstances

Some of these circumstances are based on wounded relationships between husbands and wives and parents and children, and, of course, one or more persons in these relationships may be experiencing intrapersonal difficulties, including mood disorders such as depression and anxiety, addictions or situational stressors.

Christian counselling is grounded in the Bible, and most often seeks to help a person embrace the pain of his or her experience through a personal relationship with Jesus Christ.

To enlighten members of the congregation of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana, Sakumono Main, on the relevance of counselling, the Counselling Committee of the congregation organised a programme dubbed: “Counselling Hour” on the theme: “The marriage journey with Christ,” for the congregation.

In her remarks, Mrs Patience Arthur-Baidoo of the Hope Congregation, Sakumono Estate, who was the main speaker, advised couples not to become too happy and excited after marriage, and in that mood, forget the Lord, with the women often flexing their rings to show that they are married.

Taking care

She said after marriage, couples should be careful not to neglect the Bible and family devotion because of their economic activities, but to continue to pray together and encourage others to do so and love their neighbours as themselves.

“We should not value worldly things and always yearn for money, but we should bear fruit in the church and walk in the ways of the Lord,” she said.

According to Mrs Arthur-Baidoo, seeking advice or recommendations about actions to be taken must be received from an expert, adding that no Christian walks without temptation, “but the Lord strengthens us to remain strong and resolute”.
