Court discontinues trial of man accused in Ahmed Suale murder case

A Madina District Court has discontinued the trial of Daniel Owusu Koranteng, the man accused of involvement in the 2019 murder of investigative journalist Ahmed Suale of Tiger Eye P.I.

The prosecution, led by Chief Inspector Nana Afua Bamfoa Bamfo, informed the court that the police had been directed to discontinue the case following advice from the Attorney-General’s Department.

Information gathered by the Ghana News Agency (GNA) indicates that an analysis by the Attorney-General of the police docket and records purportedly implicating Koranteng proved inconclusive and did not link him to the alleged crime.

The Attorney-General further noted inconsistencies in the sketches provided by police witnesses and consequently advised the police to pursue investigations into two other suspects believed to have directly attacked Suale.

Koranteng was therefore discharged by the court.

He was represented by Mr. Frederick Gura Sampson and Ms. Emma Jean Markin.

According to court records, Koranteng was known to have had close relations with Suale and his family before the journalist’s death.

In June 2018, NET2 Television, owned by Mr. Kennedy Agyapong, then Member of Parliament for Assin Central, broadcast images of Ahmed Suale during a programme in which the MP allegedly called for retribution against the investigative journalist.

Suale subsequently identified Koranteng as the person who provided Mr. Agyapong with his photograph and confronted him over the matter in a WhatsApp chat.

On January 16, 2019, following the publication of those images, Ahmed Suale was shot and killed by unknown assailants.

After the incident, Koranteng reportedly fled to the United Kingdom but was arrested at Amasaman upon his return to Ghana on March 15, 2025, following intelligence gathered by security agencies.

He is alleged to have admitted to having had a relationship with Mr. Agyapong and to having visited his residence. He also admitted to taking photographs with Suale but denied selling them or passing them to anyone.
