With this development, access to the company’s product is expected to increase in response to growing demands from its customers nationwide.

The company also intends to increase its staff strength from the current 700 to 1,700 in the near future.

The additional 1,000 employees would be mainly drivers whose recruitment is expected to be completed by the end of July this year.

Upon completion of the processes, the company would have also created more than 5,000 indirect jobs in the country.

Demand

After a tour of the truck yard at Kpone, the Managing Director of Dangote Cement Ghana Ltd, Mr Tor Nygard, in a statement said, the importation of the trucks was a direct response to demand for the Dangote brand of cement in the country.

He said it had become necessary to acquire the trucks because of the crucial role they played in distributing the product and making it available to clients all over the country.

“The company has plans to stimulate the Ghanaian economy by providing quality cement at an affordable price,” he indicated.

Mr Nygard said apart from providing jobs for the people, importation of the trucks into the country translated into revenue for the government through the payment of taxes.

Plant

According to Mr Nygard, the company had also invested over $100 million in putting up a modern cement grinding plant in Takoradi in the Western Region.

He said the company recently expanded its plant in Tema and had increased its silo capacity from 900 to 21,000 tonnes. The MD further indicated that, the new plant in Takoradi which is scheduled for completion next year would have the capacity to produce about 1.5 million tonnes of cement per annum.

“When completed, the Takoradi project would be a further proof of our commitment to improving infrastructural development in the country. The facility would also enable us to meet the growing demand for cement in Ghana and across the West African sub-region.,” he added.

Game Changer

The media relations manager of the company, Etornam Komla Buami, said, “This is the largest single importation of trucks by a manufacturing company in Ghana and it is obviously good news for the country.”

He said the direction taken by the company would lead to ready availability of its 42.5R grade of cement in the Ghanaian market.

“This is the highest grade of cement in the market; one reason why we continue to have an increasing demand,” the manager added.
