‘Don’t discriminate against children with disability’

Parents participating in a focus group discussion at Manso Atwere in the Amansie West District of the Ashanti Region have called on society to not discriminate against children with disability.

They said although the practice of some benevolent individuals, groups and institutions presenting cash and food items to institutions that catered for persons with disability, especially, children, was good, that alone was not enough to build their future.

Investment in projects

They have, therefore, called on institutions, individuals and government organisations to help invest in projects and programmes aimed at providing such persons with skilled training to give them a secure future.

The focus group discussion was organised by the Samuel Wellington Botwey (SWEB) Foundation as part of  a six-month research work from December 2014 to May 2015.

The organisation is being partnered by Enablement, a Netherlands-based research institute which is providing technical support and Liliane Fonds, and funding the study.

A researcher, Dr Ebenezer Saka Manful, speaking at the focus group discussion, said the burden of caring for children with disability should not be left to parents but for the society in general.

Formation of parent support groups

He underscored the importance of forming parent support groups (PSG) to enable parents and society in general to work together to improve the lives of children with disability.

An Assistant Administrator of SWEB, Ms Rose Akyere, urged parents participating in the focus group discussion to co-operate with the researchers for optimum results.
