‘Don’t neglect old people’

The President of Help-Age Ghana, Professor Araba Apt, has urged Ghanaians not to neglect the elderly because it is a stage in life where many people will eventually reach.

She said many issues affecting the elderly had not received the necessary attention and that made them to feel left out in the scheme of things.

She pointed out that, as a matter of urgency, policy makers must implement policies meant to promote the welfare of the aged in society.

“We hardly focus on things that will help the aged in our society, but we forget that every day, as long as we are alive, we are getting to the point known as old age. We must, therefore, prepare for that stage and help those who are already there because we will all get there,” she stated.

Professor Apt was speaking at an end-of-year party for members of the association in Accra last week Wednesday.

The programme was organised by the Synagogue Church of All Nations (SCOAN) in collaboration with Atlantic Catering and Logistics Limited.

Speaking at the event, a representative of SCOAN, Mr Jeffery Gamrut, emphasised the need for people to show love and care for the elderly in society, adding that such actions would make the aged feel part of society.

According to him, people ought to be passionate about issues that affected the vulnerable and in particular the aged because “we can tap into their vast experience in life and better ours.”
