Don’t take over the work of organisations — Minister

The Minister of Transport, Mrs Dzifa Attivor, has cautioned members of boards of institutions and agencies under the ministry to not take over the daily running of those entities.

According to her, there had been instances when chairpersons and members of boards had virtually taken over the management of government institutions, describing the situation as unfortunate and uncalled for.

Mrs Attivor was speaking at the inauguration of a 13-member board of directors for the Ghana Maritime Authority (GMA) in Accra last Monday.

“The unfortunate practice in the past when boards virtually took over the management should be avoided. I, therefore, entreat the board and the management to work as a team to realise the objectives of the authority.

“As a matter of caution, I wish to remind the board that they are under the supervision of the ministry and, for that reason report to it directly and should not, under any circumstance, deal with other authorities above it (the ministry) without due consultation,” she said.

Reconstituted board of directors

The board has Mr Felix Twumasi Appiah as its chairman.

The members include Mr Peter Azumah, Mr T. A. Selbey, Mr Samuel Quartey and Rear Admiral G.M. Biekro.

Others are Mr Joseph Sutherland, Mr Larsey Mensah, Mr Richard Anamoo, Alhaji Asoma Banda and Mr Joseph Agbaka.

The rest are Mrs Naa Densu Aryeetey, Ms Esther Gyebi Donkor and Captain Hannah Aggrey.

Challenge

The minister reminded the new board that the GMA was established under Act 360 of 2002, charged with the responsibility of monitoring, regulating and coordinating activities in the maritime industry.

She, therefore, challenged the members to bring their expertise to bear on the work of the authority in order to respond to the dynamics of development in the maritime sector.

She also urged them to come up with innovative funding mechanisms to reduce the financial burden on the government.

Speaking on the recent arrest of some suspected pirates in Ghana’s territorial waters, Mrs Attivor said it was a sign that the GMA was fully equipped to protect Ghana’s seas.

Assurance from board chair

Mr Appiah assured the ministry of the board’s resolve to ensure that the mission, vision and mandate of the GMA were fully realised.
