Drivers must avoid the use of their mobile phones while driving because the practice is a major cause of road accidents, the Executive Director of Wordsworth Ghana, Mr George Olomi, has advised.

He said statistics indicated that the use of mobile phones, whether hands-on or hands-free, while driving distracted the attention of drivers.

Mr Olomi gave the advice in Tema during a training workshop organised by Wordsworth Ghana for drivers of Air Liquide Ghana Limited.

The participants were taken through various driving techniques and safety procedures in driving, with the view to enhancing their driving competence.

Mr Olomi said in view of emerging challenges in the profession, it was important for drivers to undertake regular refresher courses in order to update their driving skills and enhance their safety on the road.

Participants’ experience

The Quality, Health, Safety and Environmental Manager of Air Liquide Ghana Limited, Mr Eric Kwabena Adabanyo, said the management of the company decided to organise the training programme to ensure that road accidents involving staff of the company were kept low.

Some of the participants who shared their experiences with the Daily Graphic, said the training programme had been beneficial to them.

A Business Developer for Oil & Gas at Air Liquide, Takoradi, Loveland White, said she had learnt to adopt the right attitude on the road, plan her journey before setting off in order not to be distracted and take enough rest when embarking on a long journey.

For his part, Mr Ebo Epton, also a Business Developer of Air Liquide, said the training programme had been an opportunity for him to revise his driving skills and added, “It has educated me more on what I should do that I may have forgotten.”
