The Director of Black Secret Makeup School in Accra, Mr Bernard Annoh, said it was necessary to use healthy and quality products to maintain the skin, indicating that, users of modern beauty products must understand the effects and benefits of the products they use in order to make reasonable choices.

Mr Annoh was speaking at the 3rd graduation ceremony of the Black Secret Beauty School (BSBS) in Accra last Saturday.

The event saw 34 students awarded with certificates after six weeks training while those who performed exceptionally well during the period were given special awards.

The students were taken though courses such as daily cleansing routines, identifying shades in foundations, shaping and defining of the eyebrow, makeup sequence and contouring.

The school started in 2013 as an offshoot of the Black Secret Makeup brand established by Berlin Investments.

It aims at training students in leadership skills through practical teaching to enable them to perform creditably in the beauty industry.

Challenges

Mr Annoh said the school was making efforts to provide employment opportunities for young women, and thus needed financial support to be able to enrol more students in the school.

He, therefore, called on the government to extend some financial and technical support to the school to enable it to empower women with employable skills and help reduce unemployment in the country.

Future plans

Mr Annoh said the school was taking steps to get accreditation from the National Vocational Training Institute (NVTI), to enable it to run diploma, and advanced diploma courses.

He said there would also be a day’s makeup training session for professional women with busy schedules, adding  “the school is determined to increase its intake from 2015”.

He advised the graduating students to constantly upgrade their skills in their fields of endeavour saying, “the industry is dynamic and when you stop learning, you start declining”.

The Head of BSBS, Mrs Dorothy Daniels, said the school was committed to equipping students to face every challenge in the world of makeup.

Advise to students

The Chief Executive Officer and a partner of Image Consortium, Mrs Marilyn Efua Houadjeto, advised the students to endeavour to stand out as beauticians in the makeup industry.

“Stand out as a beautician and be proud of what you do so that you will be respected and others would be encouraged to join in the thriving beauty industry”, she said.
