Drive safely this Easter season - Dzifa Attivor

This year’s Easter drive safety campaign has been launched with a call on passengers to insist on their safety while boarding commercial vehicles.

That, according to the Minister of Transport, Mrs Dzifa Aku Attivor, included insisting that drivers reduce their speed, avoid wrongful overtaking and not use their mobile phones while driving.

She was speaking at the launch of the campaign, dubbed “Passengers, Speak Up! Don’t Get Killed on the Road” in Nkawkaw last Tuesday.

Easter season

She said Easter festivities attracted a lot of human and vehicular movement that resulted in a high risk of road crashes in the country.

She, therefore, appealed to road users to behave responsibly during and after the festive period to prevent motor accidents on the road.

Measures

Mrs Attivor said the ministry was in the process of establishing the National Road Transport Regulatory Authority (NRTRA) to regulate and ensure that quality-based service was delivered by both public and private transport operators in the country.

In addition, she said the government was also working with the NRSC to embark on intense outreach programmes to educate  drivers and passengers on the need to reduce the rampant road accidents in the country.

Mrs Attivor noted that the commission had started rolling out some pedestrian crossing aids known as lollipop stands at selected locations to help schoolchildren cross the road safely.

Bad road network

The Deputy Minister of Roads and Highways, Mr Isaac Adjei Mensah, advised drivers to adhere to road traffic regulations to prevent road accidents on the road.

The Executive Director of NRSC, Mrs May Obiri-Yeboah, said the NSRC would continue with its outreach efforts with the support of stakeholders to reduce the number of motor accidents in the country.

“It is our expectation to work with our stakeholders to scale up advocacy for pedestrian safety and the non-use of motorbikes for commercial purposes,” she said.

In a speech read on his behalf, the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Mr Mohammed Ahmed Alhassan, said the police would collaborate with the passengers to ensure that  road traffic accidents were reduced.
