As a result, the ECG on Thursday cut power supply to the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC) for failing to pay a debt of GH¢700,000.

Also affected by the disconnection exercise were two telecommunication companies: tiGO and Airtel, which owed the ECG GH¢250,000 and GH¢127,000, respectively.

Others were the Volta Regional office of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) and some private entities.

Demand Notice

The exercise followed the expiration of a 14-day demand notice issued to the defaulters to settle their debts or be disconnected and prosecuted.

Speaking to the Daily Graphic, the Volta Regional Commercial Manager of the ECG, Mr Sylvester Abrefa-Besea, stated that the company was not comfortable with disconnecting its customers but “we have been forced to take such an action.”

Debts

According to him, “GBC in the Volta Region alone owes ECG over GH¢700,000. We cannot stay aloof and watch this debt increase while there is no concrete commitment to pay.”

He, however, said the company’s doors were still open to the defaulters and “we would be glad to dialogue and agree on a payment plan to ensure that the debts are paid in full.”

The Volta Regional General Manager of ECG, Ing. Joseph Forson, decried the negative impact the continuous indebtedness of institutions and individuals was having on the operations of the company.

“If we don’t act now, it will have serious repercussions in our future operations,” he indicated.
