Dubbed the “Maternity Ward Adoption Project”, the initiative is also meant to provide some medical items to support the Oda Government Hospital in the Eastern Region and the Yendi Government Hospital in the Northern Region.

The items include hospital beds, stretchers, various examination equipment and devices, scanners, mattresses, wheelchairs, weighing scales, surgical disposables, incubators and dozens of other essential items required for maternity units.

The groups sponsoring the initiative are the Rotary Club of Accra Airport, Rotary Club of Accra-Airport City and Rotary Club of Cape Coast, in partnership with the Ghana Women Association of Georgia (GWAG).

Support

At a press conference in Accra, the local representative of GWAG, Hajia Fatima Isacah, said the initiative sought to enhance healthcare delivery for pregnant women and their babies.

She said a robust maternity healthcare was essential for development and women empowerment.

“With the high maternal and infant mortality rates in Ghana, there is the need for change. We seek to be part of this change by providing tangible solutions for hospitals to enhance the delivery of care in maternity,’’ she said.

Hajia Isacah added that the project would help equip government hospitals to build capacity and increase access to hospital births for underserved women.

Immunisation

She further said the group would help in the campaign to reduce malnutrition in children, poor health care and inadequate sanitation.

“We will help to provide immunisation and antibiotics for babies, improve access to essential medical services and support trained healthcare providers for mothers and their children,” she stated.
