One contingent that will be remembered for their exemplary skills at the 58th Independence Parade at the Black Star Square in Accra yesterday, is the women riders of the Motor Transport and Traffic Department (MTTD) of the Ghana Police Service.

They excited the cheering crowd when they took their turn at the march past, with a surprising display of motoring dexterity.

The crowd continued their shouts of admiration for the skills that the police ladies exhibited on the motorbikes; skills, which a good number of people thought were limited to their male counterparts.

Helicopter rappelling

Another engaging moment was the helicopter rappelling expertise displayed by a team of the Ghana Army which dripped from a twine, let down by an aircraft to a formative attacking grouping on ground, depicting scenes of war movies that a good number of Ghanaians are accustomed to.

Masqueraders who participated in this year’s event, while contributing to the excitement, also helped to make the parade more colourful. In well-rehearsed choreographed dances led by two children, the masqueraders stirred the crowd to near endless laughter and applause.

President’s speech

When President John Mahama took his turn to address the large gathering, a cross-section of the Ghanaian society in attendance at the parade, he touched first on the recent stoking of ethno-religious sentiments and the implications for national unity.

The President, prior to his address, had been given a drum and narrative appellations by students of the Kinbu Senior High Technical School,  spearheaded by master drummer, Francis Obuobi.

He received good audience. Some patrons of the event the Daily Graphic later spoke to randomly, described the speech as food-for-thought.

Some said in spite of the challenges that the country was facing, the 58th Independence Anniversary Parade had brought some smiles to their faces and reminded them of the need for all to stay united as a country.
