The project will be handed over to the government later in the year.

The project, which began in September 2011, was funded through a 21.6 million dollar loan facility from the US and was undertaken by UEM Incorporated.

The project involved the expansion of the headwater and the rehabilitation of the old one which was constructed in 1961.

With the expansion now complete, the plant can supply 1.8 million gallons of water to the people of Mampong and its surrounding communities.

Some of the surrounding communities include Bosofour, Kyirimfa, Sumanpa, Nsuta, Beposo and Daaho.

The old plant had a daily capacity of 500 gallons.

The Minister of Water Resources, Works and Housing, Alhaji Collins Dauda, has paid a working visit to the dam to acquaint himself with the progress of work.

More water

Briefing the media, Alhaji Dauda said he was grateful to the contractors for executing the work on time, as it would enable the people of Mampong and its environs to have regular supply of water.

The expansion project became necessary because of the inability of the old plant to meet the demands of the communities which have increased in population from the time the plant was built in 1961.

The new plant is unique because its distribution point has been fitted with a Global Position System (GPS) to track any burst pipe.

Kumawu water system

The minister later visited the 3K Water Supply System at Kumawu in the Sekyere Afram Plains District also in the Ashanti Region.

The 3K Water Supply System is to supply water to Kumawu, Konongo and Kwahu Ridge when completed.

It was started in November 2011, and is expected to be completed in 2015.

Briefing the minister and his entourage, the consultant, Dr Emmanuel Asare-Boafo, said the project took its source from the Aframso river which is about 38 km from Kumawu.

So far, more than 54 km of pipelines have been laid to connect the reservoirs to the plant.

Dr Asare-Boafo said three reservoirs had been sited within Kumawu and its environs to serve communities.

When completed, he said, the project would increase access to water for the people of the communities, particularly those in Kumawu who did not have access to water due to the rocky nature of the land).
