One hundred female Community Police Assistants (CPAs) have passed out after a five-week training programme at the Ghana Police Service Command and Staff College at Winneba in the Central Region.

The CPAs were selected from 18 Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs) in the Central Region through the Youth-in-Policing programme being implemented by the Youth Employment Agency (YEA).

The programme is a collaboration between the YEA and the Ghana Police Service to complement the efforts of the police in enhancing safety and security in the country.

Apart from working as traffic wardens, the CPAs also work closely with the MMDAs on their community improvement projects.

Advice

The Central Regional Minister, Mr Kweku Ricketts-Hagan, urged  the newly recruited assistants to exhibit a high sense of diligence and professionalism in the discharge of their duties.

Mr Ricketts-Hagan, who was the reviewing officer, underscored the need for the CPAs to eschew acts of indiscipline and be committed to the performance of their duties.

He said with the approach of the 2016 November general election, the CPAs and the youth must guard against all acts that had the tendency to disturb the prevailing peace in the country.

The Ghana Police Service, he said, was challenged with inadequate human resource.

“It is for this reason that the government is investing in the Youth-in-Policing programme of the YEA to train more young men and women capable of assisting the police in carrying out their duties effectively and efficiently,” he said.

The Regional Minister, however, cautioned the CPA to always remember that they were not police officers.

“I will urge you to maintain the high standard of discipline instilled in you and be good ambassadors of peace.”

Training

The Commandant of the college, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Mrs Maame Yaa Tiwaa Addo Danquah, expressed confidence in the training offered, saying the exercise was carefully scheduled to develop and also impart into them the requisite qualities for them to function effectively.

She advised the CPAs to hold themselves in readiness for any challenges.

Applications

The Chief Executive Officer of the YEA, Mr Kobina Obu Beecham, said 3,180 Ghanaian youth out of 26,933 online applicants were selected for the programme.

He said the programme formed part of the government’s efforts to achieve goal 16 of the sustainable development goals, which focused on peaceful and inclusive society for all.
