Female engineering student elected UMAT NUGS President

A level 300 female Mechanical Engineering student of the University of Mines and Technology (UMaT) has been elected as the Local President of the National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS).

Mavis Narkwor Addy, a former student of Accra Girls’ Senior High School, beat other contestants in the highly competitive elections.

She is the first female to occupy the position in a male-dominated educational institution.

Mavis, who is a Hall Representative of Chamber of Mines Hall Annex, Gold Refinery Hall of the university and Welfare Chairperson, Assemblies of God Campus Ministry, UMaT Chapter, Tarkwa, was the Sports Prefect of the Accra Girls’ Senior High School in the 2009-2011 academic year. She was also the prayer secretary of the school’s Scripture Union and the Pentecost Students Association (PENSA).

 Born on April 25, 1991 in Accra to Mr Joel Addy and Mrs Doris Obeng, Mavis is an ardent Christian and worships with the Christ Worship Centre Assemblies of God, Sowutuom in Accra. 

She worked as an intern at the Ghana Home Loans, Accra, from August, 2011  to July, 2012 and as a pupil teacher at the Mensah Addo Memorial School from May, 2011 to July, 2011 before enrolling at UMaT. 

 

Dedication

A well dedicated lady, Mavis works under pressure, with less or no supervision and seeks positions that are challenging to bring out the best in her.She can also work on a team both as a leader or a subordinate.

She said she sought a challenging and growth-oriented position where her interpersonal and communication skills could be best utilised.

As a leading member of the students leadership team of UMaT with good communication skills and the ability to motivate others, she is expected to make use of her dedication, hard work and ability to take on new challenges to promote the growth and development of the  Student Representative Council (SRC) and the university in general.

According to Mavis, her philosophy in life is to do better than all and combine the necessary resources to cause the change that makes history.
