The security guards of the municipal assembly made the arrests last Thursday at the Weija Junction bus stop, where  the land guards were spotted with machetes hidden on them.

The two land guards, Ibrahim Sandra, 21, and Saani Mohammed, 22,  will be put before court soon.

A search conducted on the two revealed three machetes and a  locally manufactured pistol which they used in their nefarious activities.

Other members of the group, however, escaped and the police have mounted a manhunt for them.

Background

Mr Jerry Akwei Thompson, the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) of the Ga South Municipality, recalled that recently, the armed land guards went on a shooting spree, sending nurses, teachers and schoolchildren running helter skelter for their lives.

This prompted  the youth in the Oblogo area to come out boldly to challenge them.

According to Mr Thompson, had it not been for the timely intervention of the police and some elders in the area, the situation could have turned into a bloodbath.

He said the arrest of the two members of the syndicate would send a signal to the criminals that the assembly would not allow them to intimidate land developers and residents under its watch.

Guard activities

Of late, the MCE also pointed out that because land guard activities were waning, they had turned themselves into a syndicate of armed robbers using taxis to rob  passengers in broad daylight.

According to Mr Thompson,  the modus operandi of the robbers was to use a taxi with a beautiful lady seated at the back and go round looking for passengers to rob.

He said any passenger who joined such a taxi was driven to an unknown location where the lady would pull a gun at  the passenger and rob him/her at gunpoint.

He said nowadays, there had been cases of armed robberies in  broad daylight by the so-called  land guards who were protected and given a safe haven by some traditional rulers.’

Mr Thompson said it was  because of the activities of the land guards that the government found it wise to station  a detachment of the  Ghana Armed Forces in Ga South.

He said the military had been able to thwart the efforts of the land guards and their accomplices who wanted to turn Ga South into the headquarters for land guards.
