The centre, which currently has 30 children, was set up to create awareness of autism, give care to children with the condition, and also train teachers and parents to be able to give care to autistic children.

Autism is a neurological disorder that affects children and makes them unable to form normal social relationships and develop communication skills. They are, as a result, absorbed in a world of restricted, repetitive activities and interests.

Campaign to mobilise funds

The President of the association, Mrs Joyce Asante, said the group was keen on delivering on its promise to make a difference in the lives of such children. “We undertook a campaign to mobilise funds to support the Autism Centre in Accra in order to put a smile on the faces of the children during the festive season,” Mrs Asante said.

She charged the authorities at the centre to use the money in a manner that would improve the lives of the children, and also encouraged individuals and corporate bodies to consider supporting children with autism in Ghana.

Interaction

Members of the association were conducted round the centre, where they interacted with some of the children and caregivers. They gained first-hand knowledge about the conditions of the centre, as well as the challenges it had to overcome in its quest to provide quality care to autistic children.

For her part, the Founder of the centre, Mrs Serwah Quaynor, explained that the behaviour of people with autism represented their attempt to deal with an often confusing and difficult world.

She thanked the association for its kind gesture and promised to make judicious use of the donation.
