GHA to re-award seven road projects in E/R
Contracts for work on seven major road projects in the Eastern Region are to be re-awarded, as earlier contractors failed to execute the jobs.

The projects are the infamous Asamankese-Suhum, Adeiso-Asamankese, Asamankese-Kade, Apedwa-Kyebi-Bunso, Nsawam-Aburi, Nkawkaw-New Abirem and Koforidua-Bunso roads.
While these roads traverse mostly cocoa growing areas and form part of the critical network in the Eastern Region, their conditions are so deplorable that they have stirred enormous outcry, including demonstrations.
The Eastern Regional Director of the Ghana Highway Authority (GHA), Mr Ernest Arthur, in an interview with the Daily Graphic, said tenders had been opened and evaluation of bids was ongoing to re-award the projects to more competent contractors.
Maintenance programme
Aside from the major road works, Mr Arthur said the GHA was "presently implementing a number of maintenance programmes to help improve the condition of its road network.”
Under the region's 2014/2015 routine maintenance programme, for instance, he said, 14 contracts for the grading of 421 kilometres of untarred roads had been awarded and work was progressing steadily.
In addition, 22 contracts for the patching of potholes on 920 kilometres of tarred roads had also been awarded.
Meanwhile, a number of roads, 247 km in all, were also being upgraded and rehabilitated. They include the 24-km Odumase-Oterkpolu, the 16-km Trom-Somanya-Odumase-Kpong and the upgrading of the 25-km Kade-Wenchi-Akyem Oda roads1.

Mr Arthur expressed the hope that the successful completion of the projects would improve the condition of the trunk road network and ensure the provision of a safer and more reliable, affordable and accessible road transport system in the region.
