Ghana Armed Forces deny reports about arrest of Brigadier General Michael Opoku

The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) has officially denied circulating media reports claiming that Brigadier General Michael Opoku has been arrested by security operatives for possessing ammunition.

In a press release issued on Tuesday, August 19, 2025, and signed by Captain V.A. Arhin, the Acting Director General of Public Relations, the military high command stated that thorough checks with relevant authorities had failed to confirm the alleged incident.

“As at date, all enquiries from various Security Agencies and National Investigation Authorities have not corroborated the said publication of arrest,” the release stated.

The statement sought to clarify the status of the senior officer, asserting, “The Armed Forces can confirm that Brigadier General Michael Opoku remains an active member of the Ghana Armed Forces and is not under arrest for any crime committed.”

Reaffirming its commitment to the rule of law, the GAF assured the public that any soldier found to have committed a crime would face the full rigours of the law. “The Ghana Armed Forces however, wishes to assure the general public that notwithstanding the false publication, any military personnel involved in any crime of any nature would be subjected to the same procedure as any other citizen of the Country.”

Describing the viral news item as entirely false, the security institution urged the public to disregard it and issued a caution against the dissemination of false information. “The Ghana Armed Forces wishes to state categorically that the story is false and should be ignored. It urges all to refrain from such misinformation and disinformation activities.”
