Ghana Garden and Flower Show ends

A five-day Ghana Garden and Flower Show (GGFS), which brought together more than 200 florist enthusiasts, real estate developers, horticulturists and home owners ends in Accra Monday.

The show, aimed at creating awareness of the commercial and psychological benefits of urban beautification and gardening, was also intended to create employment and income-earning opportunities.

Held on the theme: “The World is your garden,” the exhibition enabled the participants to exhibit their horticulture and floriculture equipment, tools, pots, manure and services that will assist customers create beautiful gardens at the homes, organisations and offices.

Conferences and workshops were organised as part of the exhibition, where resource persons from academia and horticultural experts discussed both the health and economic benefits of gardening and flowering.

The event was organised by Strategic Communications Africa Limited (Stratcomm Africa).

Opening ceremony

At the opening ceremony last Thursday, the Chief Executive (CEO) of Stratcomm Africa, Ms Esther Cobbah, asked the public to take advantage of the many opportunities in the horticulture industry.

She said the exhibition was a forum for the participants to reflect on their individual roles in making the environment beautiful by planting more trees.

Harnessing Ghana’s horticultural potential

Ms Cobbah expressed delight that the Ghana garden and flower movement was catching on quickly with garden and flower enthusiasts and the entire public, saying: “We have been amazed at the level of interest expressed by organisations and individuals.”

A former Minister of Agriculture in Kenya, Dr Sally Kosgei, said shows like the exhibition served as a great selling point for the horticulture sector which would lead to its growth.

The Managing Director of Access Bank Ghana Limited, Ms Dolapo Ogundimu, lauded the initiative of Stratcomm, adding that the show was living up to its purpose by harnessing Ghana’s horticultural potential.

A participant in the show, Ms Ayodele Toks Agboola, advised the youth to go into the horticulture sector, adding that one way to curb the high rate of unemployment among the youth was to make the sector attractive.
