The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has released the results of the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE), with more than 600,000 up for placement in senior high, technical and vocational schools.
WAEC released the results of about 600,000 candidates who took part in the examination with the exception of 177 candidates whose entire results have been cancelled for malpractices and 718 candidates whose subject results were cancelled.
The council has also withheld the entire results of 93 candidates and the subject results of 1,240 candidates.
Moreover, the subject results of some candidates from 119 schools have been cancelled, while the subject results of some candidates from 87 schools have been withheld for further scrutiny.
"The withheld results may be cancelled or released based on the outcome of investigations by September 6, 2025," WAEC said in a statement issued after it released provisional results of the 2025 BECE over the weekend.
Exam malpractices
The punitive measures taken by WAEC were approved on Friday, August 15, this year, at the 36th Meeting of the Final Awards and Examiners' Appointment Committee for the BECE.
The meeting followed the completion of investigations into cases of irregularities detected during the conduct of BECE and the marking of scripts.
Directive
The statement, signed by the Head of Public Affairs of WAEC, John Kapi, directed candidates whose results had been cancelled or withheld to visit the official website of WAEC and click on the withheld/cancelled button on the home page.
"They will be redirected to the irregularity and investigations page. "This page will display reasons for withholding or cancelling the results. For withheld results, the candidates will receive information on the next line of action," it said.
The results, the statement added, were also available on the council's official website, www.waecgh.org, for candidates who so desire to access them online.
Statistics
Made up of 297,250 males and 306,078 females, a total of 603,328 candidates from 20,395 schools entered for the school examination, but 2,526 candidates were absent.
The candidates include 72 candidates with visual impairment, 239 with hearing impairment and 161 candidates with other test accommodation needs.
The examination was conducted at 2,237 centres across the country.
Dispatch
WAEC said the results of school candidates would be dispatched to their respective schools through the metropolitan/municipal/district directors of education.
For withheld results, the statement said candidates would receive information on the next line of action and that heads of school and proprietors might follow the same procedure using their results listing logins to know the status of withheld results of their candidates.
The statement cautioned all stakeholders to be wary of fraudsters who might promise to upgrade results for a fee, and advised candidates to note that WAEC results were secure.
