32 Journalists, media houses nominated for awards

The Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) has released a list of 32 journalists and media houses to receive honours at the 28th GJA Awards.

The country’s highest recognition platform for journalism and media practice, which honours recipients after their works have been submitted to a panel for vetting, had journalists from the Graphic Communications Group Ltd (GCGL) being slated for six awards, with its flagship publication, the Daily Graphic, also picking up an award.

The names were announced at a press conference at the Ghana International Press Centre in Accra yesterday.

The GJA President, Albert Kwabena Dwumfour, congratulated the nominees for their outstanding work, dedication and passion which had earned them a place among the best in the media space. 

The GCGL journalists are Edmund Smith Asante, who has been pencilled in for two awards; Emmanuel Bruce; Kester Aburam Korankye; Timothy Ngnenbe and Delali Sika, as well as the Daily Graphic.

Other journalists are David Andoh; Erastus Asare Donkor; Dr Neta Chris Abiana Parsram; Solomon Jojo Cobbinah; Muftawu Nabila Abdulai; Emmanuel Kwesi Debrah, and Clinton Yeboah, all of the Multimedia Group.

Also on the list are four broadcasters from Media General, namely Castro Sanyalah, Godwin Asediba, Stanley B. Blewu and Bill Eshun, with Seth Bokpe and two of his colleagues from the Fourth Estate.

Channel One TV’s Fred Duhoe, the Ghana News Agency’s Edward Acquah, Jonathan Donkor and Benedicta Gyimah Folley, both of the Ghanaian Times, are among the nominees.

Doreen Ampofo, Naa Dede Akrong, Beatrice Sanadju; Clara Amlano are the journalists who made the list from the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC), with Ridwan Kareemdeen Osumanu of EIB Network and Edward Adeti of Reporters without Borders also making it onto the list of 37.

Superhits radio, JOY FM, expository and educational programmes, PM Express on JOY NEWS TV, and Atinka TV have also been pencilled in for awards.

The ceremony

This year’s ceremony will be held on the theme: “75 Years of Excellence in Journalism: The Role of the Media in Democratic Governance and Elections”.

Among the categories for grabs for the first time is the Akoto Ampaw Award for Democracy and Good Governance, which the GJA announced last year to honour the memory of the late private legal practitioner for his dedication to the protection and promotion of media freedom.

Key among the prizes at stake are the prestigious P. A. V. Ansah Journalist of the Year, Best Female Journalist of the Year, Most Promising Journalist of the Year and Best Student Journalist of the Year.

Mr Dwumfour said the media played a crucial role in shaping public opinion, holding leaders accountable and ensuring transparency in governance.

In a world where information is power, he said the media also played a vital role in shaping the understanding of the world hence the honour and celebration.

Mr Dwumfour said this year’s awards would climax the 75th GJA Anniversary which was a year-long celebration, an indication that the awards would be bigger and better.
