78 Interdicted Immigration Officers recalled

Seventy-eight personnel of the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) who have been on interdiction for various alleged offences have been recalled to post.

They are made of 14 Senior Officers and 64 other ranks who were allegedly involved in recruitment and visa scams, as well as other offences.

The Comptroller-General of Immigration (CGI), Samuel Basintale Amadu, made the announcement during his meeting with affected personnel at the GIS headquarters last week.

CGI Amadu was in the company of his deputies, Laud Affrifah (Operations and Command Post), Isaac Owusu Mensah (Finance and Administration), and Assistant Commissioner Immigration (ACI) Phillip Peter Andoh (Legal Research and Monitoring), as well as Deputy Commissioner of Immigration, Michael Asare Bediako (Head of Human Resource Department).

Due process

The Comptroller-General explained that the recall of the interdicted officers into the Service was not an act of amnesty, but his commitment to discipline and due process.

He emphasised that the affected personnel would thus undergo internal disciplinary procedures and those found culpable would face the appropriate sanctions.

CGI Amadu stressed that disciplinary issues would no longer be prolonged, highlighting his administration's dedication to due process and hard work. He urged personnel to respect both superiors and juniors, accentuating the importance of upholding the Service's dignity.

He further cautioned the personnel against repeating past misconduct, warning that disciplinary cases involving fraud, recruitment malpractice, or visa irregularities would be referred to the Police for further investigation.

“For those eligible for promotion, due diligence will be undertaken in the light of the outcome of the trials they will be facing,” he also informed the meeting.

CGI Amadu urged them to consider their recall as another chance to exhibit the highest standards of professionalism, accountability and excellence, maintaining good conduct wherever they would be stationed, to uphold the integrity of the Service.

The beneficiary officers expressed their appreciation and thanked the CGI for the gesture.

Service Regulation

In 2023, the GIS announced the interdiction of some personnel alleged to have been involved in offences, including recruitment and visa fraud, among others, contrary to Regulation 138 (1)(a) and (k) of the Immigration Service Regulations, 2016 (L.I. 2245).

The GIS has, in recent times, been fighting against recruitment fraud, as some unscrupulous persons dupe unsuspecting people seeking employment with a promise of helping them to be enlisted for a fee.
