Aftermath of fatal robbery on Sunyani-Ntotroso road: Bono REGSEC beefs up security on highways

The Bono Regional Security Council (REGSEC) has beefed up security and initiated several security measures on roads prone to armed robbery in the region.

The security measures are to help halt the increasing incidences of armed robbery, which is becoming a daily affair in the region, particularly on the Sunyani-Ntotroso, Sunyani-Berekum and Sunyani-Wenchi highways.

The REGSEC has established more police checkpoints and security posts on the stretches to stop armed robbery.

Additionally, police and military patrol vans and surveillance motorbikes have been deployed on the roads to constantly patrol to enhance police visibility and rapid response to any threats.

Enhance security

This came to light when the Regional Minister, Joseph Addae Akwaboa, led members of the REGSEC to tour the Sunyani-Ntotroso road and Sunyani-Berekum Highway to gather ideas and information for implementation to enhance security on the roads.

The REGSEC took the action following the recent armed robbery incident on the Sunyani-Ntotroso road, which resulted in the death of a driver and caused injuries to several passengers.

After the tragic incident which occurred on Friday, June 13, 2025, the police visibility on the stretch has been improved drastically.

The increasing number of armed robbery activities on the stretches, mainly the Sunyani-Ntotroso road, had put constant fear in commuters.

Cameras

Mr Akwaboa said the council had also planned to install closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras on the road, including forest reserves along the stretch.

He explained that the cameras would be operated by the Bono Regional Police command.

Mr Akwaboa said armed robbers had taken advantage of the deplorable nature of the Sunyani-Ntotroso road and poor mobile network to carry out their activities.

He assured that the government was committed to rehabilitating the road and fixing the network problem on the road.

Mr Akwaboa hinted that REGSEC would soon erect police contacts on the roads for commuters to call when the need arose and urged the public to always give the police information that would lead to the arrest of criminals.

"We are putting in place several security measures to stop armed robbery in the region," he stated.

Mr Akwaboa said the measures put in place would make robbery unattractive for the robbers, and assured commuters of maximum security on the road.

He urged commuters and residents along the stretches to remain calm and cooperate with the security agencies to eliminate robbers to safeguard lives and property.

He expressed the hope that the visit would help the REGSEC come out with ideas to permanently address armed robbery incidents in the region.

The Nifahene of the Atronie Traditional Area, Nana Kwabena Gyan, appealed to the minister to facilitate the reconstruction of the road, explaining that the bad state of the road had encouraged armed robbery on the stretch.

He pledged the community’s support to the police and the minister to clamp down on armed robbery on the road.

Nana Gyan urged the minister to honour the promises to address the security gaps on the stretch.

He explained that Atronie was one of the major communities in the Sunyani Municipality, but it had, over the years, been neglected.

Nana Gyan commended the minister and members of the REGSEC for the visit and for implementing security measures to protect lives and property on the stretch.
