Known as Health Community of West Africa (HCOWA), it intends to collaborate with stakeholders in the health sector to build a network of health professionals and institutions across West Africa, particularly Ghana, to promote research and innovation in the health industry.

In line with that, a network to connect service providers to medical equipment, disposables and medicines would be established through collaborations between the association and stakeholders in the sector.

The inauguration of the committee was prelude to commencement of a three-day medical summit and expo scheduled to begin in Accra on August 26 to 28 this month.

In attendance would be industry leaders, innovators, and healthcare professionals from across West Africa and beyond.

The inauguration was witnessed by industry players who later toured state-of-the-art facilities at Essence Medical Laboratory, a Chinese-funded medical institution.

Collaboration

The Chief Executive Officer of HCOWA, Anna Jiang, said the association had set “ambitious long-term goals” to bring together hospitals, medical professors from China, manufacturers of medical equipment to harness their respective expertise.

This, she said, would help to promote health care, foster academic and research collaboration and build advocacy for effective policy implementation, as well as bridge the gaps in medical equipment and resources.

“Our short-term goals include recruiting a diverse and committed membership base to organise conferences, seminars and launching the HCOWA magazine to disseminate research findings, health information and updates on innovations.”

“Our doors are widely opened to medical doctors, hospitals, pharmaceutical firms, professors, clinics, medical centres, laboratories and all others who wish to join us," Ms Jiang added.

Pharma park

The Chairman of the National Executive Council of the Ghana National Chamber of Pharmacy (GNCoP), Harrison Kofi Abutiate, called on investors to inject some $3 million into a Pharmacy Industrial Park project located at the Dawa Industrial City in the Ningo-Prampram district in the Greater Accra Region.

“In these challenging times, it is more vital than ever for us to unite our efforts, share our expertise and support one another in our mission to deliver exceptional healthcare services,” he said, adding that the chamber was collecting data on the pharmaceutical industry in the country.

“If I ask you what the market share of a kidney drug is, it is difficult to come to a very definite answer. So we want to start with provable and brief data on the industry in the country.
