Be committed to democratic, inclusive governance - Staff of Right to Information urged

Staff of the Right To Information Commission (RTIC) have been reminded about their responsibility as the custodians of a national mandate to ensure that democratic and inclusive governance is upheld in the country.

They have thus been encouraged to showcase excellence, discipline and integrity in their operations.

Addressing a staff durbar to mark the World Labour Day, the Executive Secretary of the Commission, Shirley Genevieve Lartey, emphasised that the right to information was not just a mandate but also a pillar of accountability and transparency, not only from the management of the RTIC, but also from everyone who had a role to play.

Mandate

“Let us all be reminded that the right to Information is not just a mandate, it is a pillar of accountability, transparency and open governance, which places a heavy duty on every member of staff,” she stated.

She said in view of the sensitive nature of the mandate of the commission, more training and continuous capacity building would be given to the staff to build a stronger commission and ensure accountability and probity in the administration of the country.

The executive secretary disclosed that in the year 2025, the commission conducted 110 compliance exercises, completed 99 application reviews and recovered a substantial amount in penalties.

Ms Lartey said, " Great institutions are not by chance, they are built by people who show up every day and choose excellence”, and such people must be recognised and appreciated; hence, the plans by the commission to organise a regular awards scheme for outstanding staff.

Honour

The durbar was also used to honour deserving members of staff who had excelled in the discharge of their duties.

Four members of staff, who received awards for outstanding performances for the first quarter of the year, were Michael Duodo-Sakyiama, Nana Kwamena Esa De Veer, Louis Opoku and Emmanuel Donkor.

The General Manager of the RTIC Legal Directorate, Stephen Owusu, speaking on behalf of the staff, commended management for instituting the awards for hardworking staff, saying it would serve as motivation for better performance.

On behalf of the staff, he pledged that with unity and oneness of purpose, they would work to ensure that the mandate of the commission was well executed for the benefit of the country.
