Bono Region: 8 Foreigners busted for illegal gold trading

The Bono Regional Police Command has arrested eight foreigners for engaging in illegal gold exploration and purchasing at Wewa near Banda in the Bono Region.

The eight persons, who are in the grip of the police, are Sayuba Ziba, Kienu Dobou, Osman Tunabu and Nana Alhassan.

Others are Aliu Sali, Ibrahim Wulba, Alhassan Imoro and Wadrago Abdulai.

Exhibits

The Police, in its statement signed by the Bono Regional Police Public Relations Officer (PRO), Chief Inspector Thomas Akeelah, said it retrieved GHc 23,450 in cash, quantities of raw gold and gold dust, mercury and a lighter, a tool used in gold processing.

The statement said the exhibits had been retained for forensic examination, adding that the suspects were nationals of Nigeria, Cote d’Ivoire and The Gambia.

It explained that the suspects were arrested on Thursday, October 2, 2025, while actively engaged in illegal gold trading.

"They were arrested while actively engaged in illegal mining and gold trading operations in the community," it said.

Surveillance

The statement said the police acted on sustained intelligence and surveillance of their activities, emphasising that the suspects were engaged in the gold business in the farming community without a licence.

It said all the suspects were in police custody, assisting with investigations.

The statement said the command was preparing documents to put them before court.
