Chief Justice hails Tsatsu Tsikata’s impact on Ghana’s legal system

The Chief Justice, Paul Baffoe-Bonnie, has praised legal luminary Tsatsu Tsikata for his “enduring dedication to the development of Ghana’s constitutional order and the strengthening of the rule of law”.

Speaking at the conferment of a Lifetime Achievement Award by the University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA) on Mr Tsikata, the Chief Justice described him as a lawyer of “formidable skill and rare gift” whose mastery of legal principles and meticulous preparation had earned him the respect of the Bench and the admiration of colleagues across the nation.

“His submissions have frequently illuminated the deeper purposes of the law, reminding us that legal reasoning satisfies us when guided by principle and anchored in justice.

He belongs to the rare breed of lawyers in our lifetime who see the law as more than just a set of mechanical rules to be manipulated by lawyers for self-interest,” Justice Baffoe-Bonnie said.

The Chief Justice was speaking at the third Honorific Public Lecture and Award organised by the UPSA last Wednesday, attended by several dignitaries, stalwarts of the law profession and students.

It was held to celebrate five decades of the exemplary and indelible impact of Mr Tsikata on the legal fraternity — as a practising lawyer who has argued cases in the courts, a dedicated public servant, and a lecturer who has shaped and nurtured generations of lawyers and judges for Ghana and beyond.

The Chief Justice also acknowledged Mr Tsikata’s personal qualities, citing his resilience, independence of thought, and steadfast commitment to principle.

He stressed that those attributes had enabled Mr Tsikata to navigate complex and often demanding legal matters with dignity and composure.

Recognition

Justice Baffoe-Bonnie stressed that the Lifetime Achievement Award was not merely a recognition of past accomplishments but an affirmation of Mr Tsikata’s enduring influence on the current generation of lawyers.

“Mr Tsikata’s legacy continues to shape contemporary legal discourse and inspire younger members of the profession to uphold the law with seriousness of purpose and clarity of thought,” he said.

The Chief Justice said the Judiciary, which he heads as a guardian of the Constitution and protector of the rule of law, benefitted greatly from advocates who approached their work with integrity and intellectual honesty.

“Mr Tsikata’s career stands as a testament to the constructive role that lawyers play in setting legal institutions and advancing constitutional governance,” he added.

Advice to law students

Justice Baffoe-Bonnie further reminded students of the UPSA Law School and young lawyers across the country that Mr Tsikata’s career offered important lessons to learn from as they laddered up to become great lawyers.

“Excellence in law is achieved not through momentary brilliance alone, but through sustained dedication over time.

As we celebrate this distinguished honour, we are reminded that the law is a living instrument, constantly shaped by the contributions of those who interpret, apply and critique it.

“The vitality of Ghana’s legal system depends upon individuals who are prepared to engage thoughtfully with legal doctrines and courageously with questions of public importance.

Mr Tsikata’s work exemplifies this tradition of principled engagement,” Justice Baffoe-Bonnie said.
