The facilities were provided under the auspices of the Edikan Mine, a subsidiary of Perseus Mining Ghana Limited.

The Nkonya community is the beneficiary of the community centre while Abenabena has the general quarters for health workers and teachers.

The Nkonya Community Centre costs GH¢1,635,429 while the Abenabena general quarters cost GH¢792,006.

Perseus Mining Ghana Limited established the Edikan Trust Fund 12 years ago as a multi-purpose vehicle to champion, spearhead and sponsor accelerated development in its host communities.

Sponsorship

The trust fund hitherto received $300,000 annually from the mining firm to support community development projects. However, the financial commitment has now been increased to $500,000, with the coming on board of three additional communities as a result of expansion projects.

In an address during the handing over of the projects, the General Manager of Perseus Mining Ghana Limited, Daniel Agya-Mensah, said the fund had contributed close to GH¢19 million for various life-changing community development projects since its inception.

He added that the completion and unveiling of those two strategic facilities would impact the beneficiary communities and give them a phase lift.

The Board Chairman of Perseus Mining Ghana Limited and Paramount Chief of the Owirenkyi Traditional Area, Ehunabobrim Prah Agyensaim, said the inauguration of the two projects was a testament to the value the company and the trust fund placed on the host communities.

Heart desire

The Wassa Amenfi East Municipal Director of Health, Lola Majeed Aikins, expressed delight with the accommodation, saying it had been the heart desire of the health directorate for some years now.

The trust fund further cut the sod for the construction of a community centre for the chiefs and people of Wassa Akropong in the Western Region.

The Paramount Chief of the Wassa Amenfi Traditional Area, Nana Tetrete Okuamoah Sekyim II, expressed appreciation for the gesture.

Nana Okuamoah Sekyim said the facility would bring a positive change to the community when completed. He indicated that the community centre would help to facilitate and coordinate activities of the community to enhance development in the area.
