Consume local foods to stay healthy, promote economic growth - Regional Minister urges citizenry

The Western North Regional Minister, Petty Wilbert Brentum, has charged Ghanaians to consume locally produced foods to boost economic growth and create sustainable jobs for the youth.

He said the consumption of locally produced foods would also ensure good health for Ghanaians and foster economic stability.

The minister made the call at the 41st National Farmers Day Celebration held at Sefwi Surano "A" in the Bibiani-Anhwiaso-Bekwai Municipality of the Western North Region, on the theme: "Feed Ghana, Eat Ghana, Secure the Future."

He praised farmers for their resilience and contribution towards the local economy, noting that the theme underscores Ghana's commitment to ensuring food security.

He said the interventions under the NDC government’s Agriculture Modernisation Agenda—including poultry initiatives, the Agricultural Modernisation Fund, mechanisation services, irrigation development, youth agribusiness projects, and support for value addition and agro-processing—are aimed at reducing imports, boosting local production, and creating employment.

He lamented the destruction of land and water bodies caused by illegal mining and its adverse effects on farming. He urged traditional rulers to support the government in curbing the galamsey menace, noting that, together with climate change, it has negatively impacted cocoa production in the Western North Region.

Inadequate extension officers

Samuel Patrick Afari Acheampong, the Municipal Director and acting Western North Regional Director of Agriculture, highlighted the shortage of agricultural extension officers as a major challenge facing the sector, citing its impact on extension visibility, logistical support, and financial capacity to achieve targets.

He appealed to the government to prioritise the deployment of more extension officers to the region to enable the Agriculture Department to function effectively.

A 43-year-old farmer, Peter Adowa from Sefwi Debiso in the Bia West District, was crowned the Overall Best Regional Farmer.

He expressed gratitude to the District Agriculture Department and the Western North Regional Minister, Mr Brentum, for their support.

He encouraged the youth to venture into agriculture, citing its numerous benefits.

The event was chaired by Okogyeman Kwaku Gyamprah III, Paramount Chief of Sefwi Chirano Traditional Area, who commended the government's agricultural initiatives and encouraged the youth to view agriculture as a viable business opportunity.
