Early detection saves lives - Prudential Bank, urologists urge men to get checked for prostate cancer

Prudential Bank has partnered the Ghana Association of Urological Surgeons (GAUS) to screen more than 130 men for prostate cancer in Kumasi, with a call on men to prioritise regular checks for early detection of the disease.

The one-day mobile clinic, mounted last week at the bank’s Aboabo branch in the Ashanti Region, was managed by a team of urologists from the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH).

The medical team took blood samples for prostate-specific antigen (PSA) tests, offered on-the-spot medical consultations, and delivered health talks on the dangers of late diagnosis.

According to the World Health Organisation, prostate cancer is a major global health concern with more than 1.4 million new cases diagnosed annually.

In Ghana, experts say cultural attitudes and low awareness often delay diagnosis and treatment, increasing mortality rates

This screening formed part of a larger campaign by Prudential Bank to raise awareness about prostate cancer and offer sponsorships to deepen understanding of the disease.

Head of Public Relations at Prudential Bank, Bennet Frimpong, said the initiative formed part of the bank’s efforts to support global efforts to raise awareness about prostate cancer, especially during the month of September, which is dedicated to prostate cancer awareness.

“Early detection saves lives. We consider it crucial to support the global charge to prevent avoidable deaths,” he stressed, emphasising that the exercise aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal Three (Good Health and Well-being).

Prudential Bank indicated that the screening formed part of a broader campaign to raise awareness, provide medical support, and sponsor educational activities to help men adopt regular check-ups for better health outcomes.

President of GAUS, Dr Kwaku Addai Arhin Appiah, described the screening as an important community health intervention.

“We hope to continue this collaboration to reach many more people with the message that early detection of prostate cancer saves lives,” he said.
