Essuowinhene cuts sod for SHS in Amansie West

The Chief of Essuowin, Nana Akyena Kwagyan Nuama V, has cut the sod for the construction of a Senior High School (SHS) on a 25-acre parcel of land at Essuowin in the Amansie West District of the Ashanti Region.

The Chairman of the Steering Committee of the project, Kwame Owusu Nuako, in an address, emphasised the urgent need for an SHS in the district, noting that the Amansie West currently had limited second-cycle institutions, forcing many students to travel long distances to access education.

He expressed gratitude to stakeholders and community members for their unwavering support, encouragement, and contributions toward the project.

He added that the school would ease the burden on parents and help nurture future leaders and appealed to the community to continue supporting the initiative and to pray for its successful completion.

Contributions

A member of the steering committee, Sophia Awotwe, highlighted the contributions of Nana Akyena Kwagyan Nuama V, as an industrialist and philanthropist, who has played a significant role in supporting development in the community.

She stressed that education remained key to equipping the youth with the knowledge and skills needed to become responsible and productive citizens.

She further disclosed that a donation of GH¢500,000 made about a year ago by Nana Akyena Kwagyan Nuama V and other stakeholders has been instrumental in commencing the project.

The initiative has been described as a legacy project aimed at benefitting both present and future generations.

Legacy and development

In his address, Nana Akyena Kwagyan Nuama V, gave a historical account of education in Essuowin, noting that Essuowin Basic and Middle Schools have produced many prominent individuals, including himself, who are contributing to the country’s development.

He stated that his forefathers contributed to the establishment of SHSs and universities, and it is now his responsibility to continue that legacy.

He further outlined other developmental projects undertaken in the community, including the construction of a maternity block, completion of four self-contained housing units for nurses at the Essuowin Health Centre and the provision of medical laboratory equipment for the community health centre

On the SHS project, he revealed that Essuowin SHS will become the third second-cycle institution in the Amansie enclave with such a modern structure.

He added that all architectural designs have been completed and expressed confidence that the school will shape the future of the youth and contribute to national development.

The Ashanti Regional Director of Education, Dr William Amankra Appiah, highlighted the importance of education in driving development.

He noted that communities that rely solely on government support for infrastructure may experience slow growth and commended the people of Essuowin for taking initiative.

He also praised the appealing architectural design of the project, which he believed would attract students upon completion.

The Member of Parliament for Amansie West, Tweneboah Kodua Fokuo, emphasised that modern education now goes beyond textbooks and focuses on skills development, technology and called on all to help make the project a success.
