Establish House of Queens to champion women’s devt — Queenmothers

The Paramount Queenmother of the Denkyira Traditional Area, Nana Ama Saara III, has advocated a constitutional review to allow for the establishment of a National and Regional House of Queens.

“We need a chamber of Queens where issues of women and children can be well addressed. We have already taken steps towards that in the previous administration and we hope this new administration will implement it.

“We have been to the National House of Chiefs, and we are currently at the regional basis, where we are having various consultations about it so that there can be changes in the Chieftaincy Act and the 1992 Constitution,” Nana Saara III said.

Speaking at the Seventh Annual Queenmothers workshop in Takoradi, the Queenmother of the Denkyira Traditional Area explained that such a move would help in the comprehensive development of women and children in the country, particularly after the passage of the Affirmative Action Bill.

The workshop, which was held on the theme: “Combating Disinformation and Misinformation: The Role of Queenmothers in Ensuring Good Governance,” was organised by the Konrad Adenauer Stiftung (KAS), Ghana Office in collaboration with the National Queenmothers Ghana in the Western Region.

Threats

Addressing the gathering, the Director of Programmes for Konrad Adenauer Stiftung, Ghana Office, Dr Joseph Darmoe, highlighted the threats of disinformation and misinformation to the peace and stability of society.

“We organised this workshop for the two regions purposely to educate them on the dangers of disinformation and misinformation and how best they can help in combating it in their communities.

“We would like to also use this workshop to give them the opportunity to support their advocacy activities,” he said.

Important training

The President of the Bono Regional Queenmothers Association, Nana Yaa Ansua, expressed gratitude to the organisers for such an important workshop geared towards empowering queenmothers.

She said at a time when disinformation and misinformation were on the rise, it was important for traditional leaders to be made aware of how to navigate the threats it posed to also educate their communities.
