Fire guts ECG warehouse in Cape Coast - Destroys dozens of electrical cable drums
The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) warehouse in Cape Coast was gutted by fire yesterday leading to the destruction of cables running into thousands of Ghana cedis.
About 60 drums of 2×25mm aluminium electrical cables got damaged. No casualty was recorded.
Fire officials said the cause of the fire was not yet known.
It took the personnel of the Ghana National Fire Service in the Central Region about four hours to bring the fire under control.
The Central Regional Public Relations Officer of the GNFS, DOIII Abdul Wasiu Hudu, said the GNFS responded to a distress call reporting relating to a fire at the warehouse of ECG at 4:28 p.m. last Wednesday.
He said the swift intervention of the GNFS personnel saved the warehouse from total ruins.
He said on arrival at the scene at 4:35 p.m. the firefighters observed that the fire had engulfed the outdoor stock yard of the warehouse where bundles of 2x25 aluminium cables were stored.
DOIII Hudu said the firefighters from the regional headquarters quickly called for assistance from the Cape Coast Metropolitan Fire station, who upon accessing the situation engaged in managing the spread of the fire.
He said firefighters strategically prevented the fire from spreading to the main warehouse and adjourning properties until the fire was totally extinguished at around 8 p.m.
The Central Regional Commander of the GNFS, ACFOII Merinda Mary Attigah-Mensah, who was at the scene advised that fire safety should be given a priority in every facility or premise, especially at this time when the weather was dry.
