Ghanaian batallion in Lebanon comes under missile attack

Two Ghanaian soldiers serving on peacekeeping duties in Lebanon were critically wounded when the Ghana Battalion Headquarters came under missile attack yesterday.

One other soldier serving with the battalion is said to have been traumatised by the incident.

A statement issued by the Ghana Armed Forces in Accra yesterday said the incident was a "fallout of the current on going IDF (Israeli Defence Forces) and Hezbollah exchanges in Southern Lebanon".

"The Ghana Armed Forces wishes to inform the general public that as a fallout of the current on-going IDF and Hezbollah exchanges in Southern Lebanon, the Ghanaian Battalion Headquarters in United Nations Interim Force (UNIFIL), Lebanon came under two missile attacks between 1745 and 1752 hours local time," the statement signed by the acting Director-General in charge of Public Relations of the Ghana Armed Forces, Captain  Veronica Adzo Arhin, said.

"Two soldiers are critically injured, while one other has been traumatised.

"Additionally, the Officers’ Mess facility also got hit and has been burnt down completely.

The injured are receiving treatment at the Level One Medical Bunker and are currently stable while arrangements are underway for their evacuation to the UNIFIL Headquarters Referral Hospital.

"The Ghana Armed Forces assures the general public to remain calm amidst the fragile situation as troops are currently safe in underground bunkers," the statement added.

It revealed further that the Government of Ghana through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs had protested the unfortunate incident at the United Nation’s Headquarters in New York in the United States of America, "and urged the parties involved in the conflict in UNIFIL to be mindful of their responsibilities regarding the safety of all peacekeepers in the theatre".

Background

The conflict between Israel and Hezbollah has resurfaced lately since the start of the war between Iran and the combined force of Israel and the United States.

Dozens of Iranian leaders, including Supreme Leader, Ayatola Ali Khameini, and top Cabinet officials, have been killed since American and Israeli forces began discharging missiles and other ammunition on strategic installations in Iran on February 28.

Since then, the war has spread to affect other installations in the Arab community, particularly American facilities.
