Identify accident prone areas for personnel deployment- MTTD Director tells commanders
The Director General in charge of the Motor, Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) of the Ghana Police Service, Commissioner of Police (COP) Mr Christian Tetteh Yohuno, has directed all regional, divisional, district and unit commanders to identify accident prone areas in their jurisdiction for the deployment of personnel to enhance visibility.
He said the presence of the police personnel on the road and accident prone areas during this festive season, would ensure that motorists adhered to the road regulations and help avoid the loss of lives through accidents.
Speaking at the closing ceremony of a training programme for personnel of the MTTD, drawn from the Central, Brong Ahafo and Western regions, in Kumasi, Mr Yohuno said the personnel so deployed would be required to ensure strict supervision, as a preventive measure before, during and after the festive season.
He said in view of the knowledge the participants had acquired, they would be expected to exhibit more professionalism in their work and warned thus, “those of you who will misconduct yourselves, will be severely sanctioned and also shown the exit from the MTTD.”
Improved skills
Mr Yohuno said the training which had been carried out for all MTTD personnel throughout the country, formed part of the outfit’s agenda to sharpen the skills and competence of the personnel, towards the objective of becoming a world class traffic enforcement agency.
He noted that the conduct exhibited by some personnel in the past had not been the best and the training was to equip all the participants with the skills to become more professional to win the trust of the people.
He advised that for them to win the trust of the public and for the latter to feed them with information, they ought to be civil with the public and treat everybody with respect and dignity.
New directive
Mr Yohuno said unless otherwise stated by the Inspector General of Police, any officer who had not undergone the training should not be allowed to perform MTTD duties.
In all, 2215 personnel from the MTTD throughout the country have undergone two weeks orientation.
Among other topics, they were taken through, Integrity and professionalism in traffic management; communication skills; use of traffic enforcement devices; stress management and mental health, and techniques in traffic control and management.
