Immigration Service, police intensify efforts for Gbintiri attackers
The Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) and the Ghana Police Service have intensified efforts to track down the unknown gunmen who brutally attacked officers of the GIS, resulting in the death of one while on duty at the Gbintiri border post in the North East Region.
The Comptroller-General of Immigration, Samuel Basintale Amadu, has, therefore, appealed to residents in the area to volunteer any information that may lead to the arrest of the perpetrators.
“We are deeply saddened by the loss of our officer and we are collaborating closely with the police to apprehend those behind this barbaric act. No effort will be spared in ensuring justice for the fallen officer,” he emphasised.
Attack
Mr Amadu was speaking in an interview with the media in Tamale last Monday when he visited Assistant Immigration Control Officer II (AICO II), Oppong Daniel, the officer who narrowly survived the attack and is currently receiving treatment at the Tamale Teaching Hospital.
On Friday, October 3, 2025, two GIS officers were brutally attacked by unknown gunmen while on duty at the Gbintiri border post.
The incident resulted in the death of Assistant Immigration Control Officer II (AICO II) Rafiq Mohammed, while AICO II Oppong Daniel sustained severe gunshot wounds.
Quick recovery
During the visit, Mr Amadu said the injured officer was responding to treatment, adding that the service was providing the needed support to ensure that he recovered very quickly.
He, however, commended the medical team at the Tamale Teaching Hospital for their professionalism in attending to the injured officer.
He expressed the service’s condolences to the family of the late AICO II Rafiq Mohammed.
The Comptroller-General indicated that the service was considering deploying additional personnel to northern Ghana to help contain the growing security threats, particularly those linked to terrorist activities in the Sahel region.
“We may have to strengthen our operational presence in the north to counter emerging threats from cross-border criminal groups and terrorist infiltration,” he added.
Mr Amadu further appealed to residents in border communities to voluntarily share information with security agencies to help with investigations and maintain peace and stability in the country.
