Korle Bu to construct new 500-bed capacity children’s hospital

The Korle Bu Teaching Hospital (KBTH) has announced plans to construct a new 500-bed-capacity Children’s Hospital.

This project, the hospital said, would be constructed under the aegis of the Ga Mantse, who had engaged some investors to help realise the project.

The Chief Executive Officer of the hospital, Dr Yakubu Seidu Adam, announced this at the 2025 annual performance review of the hospital.

He said ahead of the construction, the Child Health Department of the hospital had initiated a fund mobilisation campaign aimed at raising GH¢10million for essential renovation and repair works at the department.

He said the initiative, which was dubbed the “100 by 100” campaign, sought to encourage 100,000 individuals to contribute a minimum of GH¢100 each, adding that the campaign would be formally launched.

“This cause is for our children, our nation, and humanity.

The department serves patients from all regions of Ghana and also receives referrals from across the West African sub-region, as people travel from neighbouring countries to access its services.

“I, therefore, call on all well-meaning Ghanaians to support this laudable initiative and join the '100 by 100' campaign so that together, we can help the Department of Child Health and the hospital achieve this important goal,” he said.

Maternity block

Dr Adam further announced that the Ministry of Health had initiated plans to construct a new maternity block for the hospital.

He expressed the hope that the renewed determination to construct a new block would materialise, with construction work beginning before the end of this year.

He mentioned significant strides that had been made in strengthening clinical services and expanding specialist care at the hospital to include a stable oxygen supply; installation of a new dental X-ray unit;  cardiac catheterisation laboratory;  relocation of the Ear, Nose and Throat Department to a new building, X-ray machine for the polyclinic and acquisition of state-of-the-art ENT equipment.

Other speakers at the performance review included the Director of Medical Affairs at the hospital, Dr Frank Owusu-Sekyere and the Board Chairman, Professor Titus Beyuo.
