Lordina Mahama hands over maternity, children’s ward to Nkoranza Health Centre
A former First Lady, Lordina Mahama, has handed over a newly built fully equipped maternity and children’s ward to the Nkoranza Health Centre.

The facility has a surgical theatre, a delivery room, and a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) with incubators and phototherapy machines.
It also has medical equipment, including an ultrasound machine, patient monitors, autoclaves, vaccine fridges, modern adjustable hospital beds and baby cots, as well as doctors' and nurses’ offices and examination rooms.
Excitement
Mrs Mahama, who is also the President of the Lordina Foundation, expressed her excitement about the project's completion and handing over.
She noted that the Nkoranza facility was an expanded version of the first facility built in Bole two years ago.
That development, she said, signified the foundation’s commitment to improving maternal and child health care in the country.
Mrs Mahama lamented that maternal and child health remained a critical issue in the country and Africa at large.
She said approximately 255,000 women died from childbirth complications, with over one million children dying before reaching one month of age, each year.

She expressed the hope that the new facility would ensure safe deliveries for women and children in Nkoranza and beyond.
Mrs Mahama also affirmed that her foundation would continue to support the provision of quality health care for women and children, fostering a safe and healthy society for all.
Transition
The Medical Director of the Nkoranza Health Centre, Dr Cornelius Atsu Gligui, said the new facility would help transition the centre into a polyclinic and its status as a baby-friendly facility.
“This is an ultra-modern hospital equipped with state-of-the-art machines and will enable us to deliver quality health care to the Nkoranza community,” he stated.
He also expressed profound gratitude to former President John Mahama and his wife, the board of the Lordina Foundation, the contractor, and all who contributed to making the “remarkable project” possible.
The Deputy Regional Director of Health, Helen Agodzo, emphasised that the Lordina Foundation Maternity and Children’s Ward was the first medical facility the Bono East Region had received since its creation in 2019.
She expressed her gratitude to the Lordina Foundation for this thoughtful initiative.
Optimistic
Mrs Agodzo was optimistic that the facility would attract specialist medical professionals to provide top-quality health care to the community.
The newly constructed facility had a standby generator to ensure an uninterrupted power supply, a basement with offices and meeting rooms, furniture and office fittings for the medical staff, wheelchairs, and bedside lockers.
The foundation also presented detergents, hand sanitisers, surgical gloves, theatre gowns and masks.
Mr Mahama took the opportunity to celebrate his wife's passion for the welfare of women and children.
“It is a blessing to have a wife who is passionate about the welfare of people,” he remarked.

He highlighted the foundation's achievements in various charity projects, such as implementing maternal and child healthcare projects and initiatives and women’s empowerment.
Mr Mahama acknowledged the unfortunate circumstances many Ghanaians were facing.
He reiterated his commitment to providing accessible health care at all Ghana CHPS compounds, health centres, and polyclinics under the next National Democratic Congress (NDC) government.
