Make position on LGBTQ+ clear - Global Evangelical Church Moderator to govt
Ghana must boldly declare its stand on issues of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Queers (LGBTQ+) internationally and show no fear of losing international financial assistance, the Moderator of the Global Evangelical Church (GEC) has said.
Rt Rev. Samuel Prosper Dzomeku said the country could not afford to compromise such important family values because of money, and urged Ghanaians to speak up whenever such matters came up.
“I believe wherever Ghanaians find themselves and issues of family values show up, they should speak against such moves and make everybody know that in Ghana we believe that marriage is between a man and a woman, and not the same-sex,” he said.
His call followed the recent uproar among Ghanaians on the alleged abstention of the country from voting on the LGBTQ+ issue at the United Nations (UN).
The moderator said although the Ministry of Foreign Affairs had debunked the assertion, the sector Minister, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, must do well to promote the country’s virtues when the need arose.
The moderator was speaking in an interview with the Daily Graphic in Accra last Sunday during the ordination of 15 Reverend Ministers of the GEC.
Church, national development
Rev. Dzomeku urged churches to see themselves in contemporary times as partners with the government and rally behind it in the development of the country.
He emphasised that making up 70 per cent of the population, Christians must also take interest in praying for the government to take divine decisions that would inure to the benefit of the country.
“We must pray for unity of purpose among the three arms of government so that they can lead this country to continue enjoying the peace that we have enjoyed over the years,” he said.
The moderator added that although the Church’s core mandate was to win souls for Christ Jesus, it must also prepare in investing in them to be great ambassadors wherever they found themselves.
He emphasised that churches must also be creative in establishing some businesses aside the establishment of social institutions such as schools and hospitals to create jobs and contribute to the country’s growth.
Leadership
In his message to the newly ordained pastors, Rev. Dzomeku urged them to live by the Word of God and not rely on their own understanding or false prophecies and teach their congregants the Word of God.
He argued that the engagement of Christians in vices had been partly due to lack of sound teachings and doctrines; hence the call on the new church leaders to do what was right by the Word of God.
The moderator also urged the congregants to welcome the new pastors as people sent by God and partner them to derive the best from whatever God had imbued in them for their benefit.
