Methodist Church commissions 58 ministers

The Methodist Church Ghana has commissioned 58 ministers who will be posted to branches of the church across the country to help to revive the faith of members.

They will be engaged in fieldwork during a three-year probation period starting from October, after which they will be ordained as full-fledged ministers of the gospel.

The commissioning service took place on Saturday, June 21, 2025, at the UPSA auditorium in Accra. The event attracted over 2,500 people, including chiefs, family members, and church leaders from across Ghana.

The 58 men and women were commissioned by the Presiding Bishop of the Methodist Church Ghana, Very Reverend Professor Joseph Kwabena Asamoah-Gyadu.

Leadership, discipline

The Presiding Bishop challenged the ministers to demonstrate moral uprightness in both private and public life, saying “leadership is about influence. Those who preach must live what they preach. If you are a moral example, then you have the standing to challenge secular leaders.”

Very Reverend Professor Asamoah-Gyadu also urged the ministers to embrace discipline, perseverance and diligence.

“Success and progress do not come as a matter of course. You must work for it,” he said.

He cautioned them of spiritual and moral pitfalls, including temptation, external pressures, and personal weaknesses, adding “be spiritually disciplined. Be pastorally disciplined. Be morally disciplined. Avoid profane chatter, and walk in the spirit.”

Beyond preaching

The Presiding Bishop then admonished the new ministers to embrace a wider vision of Christian ministry of responding to national concerns and societal injustices.

“Christian ministry is not simply about preaching; it is also about community impact. Good preaching must challenge the unjust structures of society,” he said.

In an interview with the Daily Graphic after the service, Very Reverend Professor Asamoah-Gyadu indicated that  the church would continue its historic mission in education, healthcare and advocacy in its 190th year in Ghana.

“After 190 years, we want to continue our ministry of public impact through our schools, our medical facilities, and generally influencing society for the sake of the gospel,” the Presiding Bishop said.
