The Ministry of Food and Agriculture (MOFA) has received assorted items from different companies to support the sector, including the 2025 National Farmers Day celebration.
The items were 100 jet motorised sprayer machines estimated at GH¢250,000 for distribution to farmers in the country and 150 pairs of Wellington boots as prizes to celebrate farmers.
The sprayer machines were donated by K. Badu Agrochemicals, while the Wellington boots were donated by Ndede Company Limited, a Ghanaian manufacturer of Wellington boots.
The Minister of Food and Agriculture, Eric opoku, received the items at separate ceremonies.
The sprayer machines are used for fumigation and spraying, especially cocoa farms and anything that could be powered by knapsack sprayer.
The presentation of the sprayer machines was done in Accra last Wednesday by the company’s Accra Branch Manager, Lennox Badu.
Farmers
Mr Opoku gave the assurance that the ministry would ensure that the machines were received by the farmers in order to help with food production in the country.
Appealing to other companies to support the National Farmers’ Day celebration, Mr Opoku said this was the time for every company to contribute to the agricultural transformation of the country.
On his part, Mr Badu said the machines were not electric but powered by fuel as such, it could be used without electricity.
Added to this, he said it was fast and has good pressure for which reason anywhere one wanted to spray, be it large or a small area, it was able to do so.
“We spend about $2 billion importing food into this country. This is our way of growing agricultural business in Ghana,” he said.
Mr Opoku called on corporate bodies and institutions to support the upcoming 2025 National Farmers Day celebration through donations.
Receiving the donation of wellington boots, he urged other companies to follow suit to ensure a successful celebration, stressing that agriculture was foundational to the nation’s development and food security.
Mr Opoku emphasised that donations were for the benefit of farmers, and assured that all contributions would be transparently distributed.
"This donation is not to the Ministry of Food and Agriculture, but to the farmers.
We assure them that the Ministry is simply a conduit to ensure the smooth and transparent transfer of all the items received, including the 150 pairs of wellington boots, directly to the farmers."
"We also encourage other companies to come on board, as agriculture is the foundation upon which all human activity depends," he said.
Upcoming launch
He also revealed that preparations are underway for the official launch of the Farmers Day programme, pending confirmation of the venue by the President, H E John Dramani Mahama.
He mentioned that the Ministry is actively working in the field to identify genuinely deserving awardees, promising transparency and fairness in the selection process by involving technical experts and making farm assessments publicly visible.
Finally, the Minister committed to delivering all awards at the event, avoiding past delays where winners received their prizes months after the celebration, and stressed that the entire programme should be concluded during the event itself, with no outstanding issues afterward.
Vital role of farmers
Speaking during the donation ceremony, General Manager of Ndede Company Limited, Nana Ehoa Acquaye highlighted the vital role farmers play in Ghana’s economy, describing them as "special people" who ensure food security for the nation.
She announced the presentation of 150 pairs of Wellington boots to support farmers’ safety and productivity, emphasizing it as a gesture of appreciation, not done for returns.
She called on the private sector to actively support farmers and the local economy.
