MTN Ghana supports YIKROSEC with ICT laboratory

The GH¢1.3 million facility has 40 desktop computers and two interactive smart boards meant to provide a great learning experience for students from YIKROSEC and its surrounding areas.

The facility, which was built within six months, was completed furnished, inaugurated and handed over to the school community at a short ceremony in the school at Somanya in the Yilo Krobo Municipality in the Eastern Region on Thursday, February 27, 2025.

Why YIKROSEC in the Eastern Region?

Dr Mate said YIKROSEC SHS held immense potential to become a benchmark for ICT education, however, the school lacked a well-equipped ICT facility and that hindered the school’s potential, adding “without a proper ICT laboratory, integrating teaching and offering ICT as an elective subject was simply not feasible”.

He said in 2024 alone, the MTN Ghana Foundation proudly donated a Robotics Centre, an ICT Library and an integrated STEM Laboratory to the Mamfe Methodist Girls SHS, the Aburi Secondary Technical and the Wiamoase Community respectively.

New avenues

He said with these advanced tools at their fingertips, both students and teachers would unlock new avenues for research, creativity and digital experience. He added that as the facility was officially handed over, the school authorities,  students and all beneficiaries should embrace the culture of maintenance to safeguard the valuable resource for future generations.

Game-changer

The Headmaster of the school, Philip Narh Donkor, said the facility was not only a room filled with computers but a game-changer, stressing that in today’s fast-moving digital world, technology was no longer a luxury but a necessity.

He lauded the MTN Ghana Foundation for making the students of YIKROSEC to learn smarter and achieve more to compete with the global world, saying “As we prepare to transform into SMART school, we have integrated technology into our daily operations.

The Director of STEM School in Ghana, Olivia Opare, lauded the MTN Ghana Foundation for the edifice, which was a testament to the commitment of the MTN Foundation to promoting STEM education and empowering the next generation of innovators and leaders.

She said the Ghana Education Service (GES) recognised the partnership of the MTN Ghana Foundation and the role it was playing nationwide in shaping and enhancing the future of students and hoped such partnership would continue going into the future.

The Eastern Regional Minister, Rita Akosua Awatey, who is an old student of the school and former staff, was equally grateful to the donors for the immense support not only to YIKROSEC but other schools nationwide.

She hoped the support from the MTN Ghana Foundation was going to enhance effective teaching and learning of ICT, which has come to stay in the educational curriculum in the country.
