National Security overhauls Tema Port operations

The National Security Council has launched sweeping reforms at the Tema Port to enforce operational discipline, enhance efficiency, and fortify national revenue protection within that environment.

The National Security Coordinator, DCOP Razak Abdul-Osman,  has, therefore, directed the dissolution of all special task forces and operational units functioning within the port with immediate effect.

All affected personnel have been asked to return to the secretariat in Accra for debriefing and strategic reposting.

The restructuring is a proactive measure to eliminate operational redundancies, dismantle parallel command structures, and instil a clear, unified chain of command.

Initiative

The initiative is central to the government’s broader agenda of strengthening port security, plugging revenue leakages, and ensuring that all agencies operate with utmost integrity and professionalism.

Sources at the Tema port told the Daily Graphic that the secretariat had instituted robust security measures to ensure the port remained secure and fully operational during the transition period.

In line with that, a newly established Internal Affairs Unit at the secretariat had been tasked to ensure that the reforms were effectively carried through.

The process for reposting personnel would be conducted swiftly and strategically, with a focus on aligning staff competencies with the requirements of the new operational framework, the source stated.

It said the measures underscored the government’s unwavering commitment to safeguarding critical national assets and ensuring that the Tema Port functioned as a secure and reliable hub for trade and economic activities.

Petition

A civil society body, the Anti-Economic Saboteurs Bureau, had petitioned the government over operational issues at the Tema Port, alleging deliberate acts of economic sabotage.

It appealed to President John Dramani Mahama to undertake an overhaul of the system, especially the security architecture at the port to protect the government and national economic interests.

The bureau mentioned one major area of concern to be the existence of a sophisticated revenue and economic fraud syndicate, involving some people in responsible positions at the port.

The syndicate, it alleged, had virtually turned national ports into “a family NGO”.

The initiative is aimed at strengthening port security, plugging revenue leakages, and ensuring that all agencies operate with utmost integrity and professionalism.
